I like to work with gold because it reminds me of the glowing sun. I grew up with Russian Orthodox icons in my home and was also fascinated by how ornate churches elevate their religious icons with gold leaf. Similarly, in this piece I elevate nature to the divine by using gold in the background. For me meditating on nature is like meditating on the divine. 

You can stop on the trail and observe each leaf. Every single one is special and unique but we are unlikely to stop and notice these details. I hope this painting reminds us to notice the little things and stop and appreciate natures beauty. That way you can "hold the sunshine" within yourself.
